Peer-produced Privacy Protection A Common-pool Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Privacy risks have been addressed through technical solutions such as privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) as well as regulatory measures including Do Not Track. These approaches are inherently limited as they are grounded in the paradigm of a rational end user who can determine, articulate, and manage consistent privacy preferences. This implies that self-serving efforts to implement individual privacy preferences lead to socially optimal outcomes with regard to information sharing. Consequently, solutions to specific risks are developed, and even mandated, without effective reduction in the overall harm of privacy breaches. We present a systematic framework to examine the limitations of current technical and policy solutions. To address the shortcomings of existing privacy solutions, we argue for considering information sharing to be transactions within a community. Outcomes of privacy management can be improved at a lower overall cost if peers, as a community, are empowered by appropriate technical and policy mechanisms. Designing for a community requires encouraging dialogue, enabling transparency, and supporting enforcement of community norms. In this paper we show how peer production of privacy is possible through PETs that are grounded in the notion of information as a common-pool resource and community governance. Privacy Protection in Personalized Web Search: A Peer Group-Based Approach
Privacy protection in web search engines is becoming more and more serious in recent days. In this paper, we study the problem of privacy protection in web search, with a special focus on IP-address based personalized web search. Our goal is to break the linkage between users’ identities (e.g., IP address) and their issued queries so as to prevent privacy breaches. Our privacy model, which shar...
متن کاملThe devil is in the metadata - New privacy challenges in Decentralised Online Social Networks
Decentralised Online Social Networks (DOSN) are evolving as a promising approach to mitigate design-inherent privacy flaws of logically centralised services such as Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. A common approach to build a DOSN is to use a peer-to-peer architecture. While the absence of a single point of data aggregation strikes the most powerful attacker from the list of adversaries, the dece...
متن کاملTheoretical Framework for Understanding Interpersonal Privacy Protection on Social Network Sites
Traditional privacy research would suggest that whether to disclose personal information or not is an individual-based action. However in this paper, we suggest that the consideration of interpersonal level of interaction would also be of vital importance to privacy protection on Social Network Sites (SNS). Based on the theory of self-efficacy, we postulate a research framework that includes th...

متن کاملSemantics-enabled Policies for Super-Peer Data Integration and Protection
Extending from the previous semantic privacy-preserving model, we propose a widescale super-peer data integration and protection architecture. Any user from a superpeer domain can contribute new data, schema, or even mappings for other super-peer domains to integrate the information. Each super-peer domain is essentially a mediatorbased data integration system, where an agent at the super-peer ...
